Barry Island to Cardiff Barrage – on the Wales Coast Path
Beyond Barry Island, docks and industry push the route inland, but after Sully Bay it is easy walking by the coast all the way to Penarth

Outline
Distance: 15 miles/24 kilometres (9 miles/14.5 kilometres using bus)
Start: Barry Island, junction of A4055 with The Parade – ST 106 668
Finish: Cardiff Barrage car park – ST 190 724
Maps: Ordnance Survey Landranger 170 Vale of Glamorgan and 171 Cardiff & Newport OR Explorer 151 Cardiff & Bridgend
Services: The resort of Barry Island has a couple of fine beaches, but the ensuing road walk skirting Barry’s docks and coastal industry has little merit. Unless determined to walk every step of the way, it is best avoided by catching a bus to Sully. Beyond, the route largely sticks with the coast and is once more pleasant above low cliffs and rocky shores. After rounding Lavernock Point, it rises over higher ground to the resort of Penarth and the southern end of the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
