The Wales Coast Path is open all year round and provides ample opportunities for excellent short walks, circular walks, day walks,  weekend walks, dog walks, and family walks. The whole end-to-end Wales Coast Path is roughly 870 miles/ 1400 km long and is handily split into seven main sections.

  • North Wales Coast – Chester to Bangor –  80 miles / 125 km
  • Isle of Anglesey – complete circuit from Menai Bridge – 130 miles / 210 km
  • Llyn Peninsula – Bangor to Porthmadog – 110 miles / 180 km
  • Snowdonia and Ceredigion Coast – Porthmadog to Cardigan – 140 miles / 225 km
  • Pembrokeshire Coast – Cardigan to Tenby/Amroth – 186 miles / 300 km
  • Carmarthenshire and Gower Coast – Tenby/Amroth to Swansea – 130 miles / 210 km
  • South Wales Coast (including the Glamorgan Heritage Coast) – Swansea to Chepstow – 115 miles / 185 km

Public transport

Many day sections and short walks are accessible by train, bus and taxi, as well as by car. Coastal trains include the Chester to Holyhead (Anglesey) line, with excellent walks from the frequent stops. Other coastal trains with plenty of walks opportunities include the Pwllheli to Machynlleth line that runs down the Snowdonia and Ceredigion coast past Porthmadog, Harlech and Barmouth.

There are sections of the Wales Coast Path to suit all kinds of users from long-distance walkers to dog walkers, cyclists, families with children, as well as pushchair and wheelchair users. Surfaces vary from flat promenades and tarmac path to rugged clifftop paths and steep and rocky sections.

Interactive map

The coastal path is generally well signposted and way-marked and easy to follow. This website provides mobile-friendly large scale and zoomable Ordnance Survey mapping. It will even show you, live, exactly where you are on the path at any moment. However, it’s sensible to carry paper OS maps too, in case of battery loss or poor signal.

Walkers should plan to wear or carry the right outdoor clothing, including warm layers and waterproofs, a hat and proper walking boots. Don’t forget plenty of water and some food, plus a phone and some money.
