Walks to the best pubs along the South Wales Coast

by Julia Goodfellow-Smith

The comfortable, friendly and often upmarket pubs along the South Wales coast complement the walking on this superb stretch of the Wales Coast Path. Each walk incorporates a section of the Wales Coast Path, and starts and finishes close to a great, carefully selected pub. Combined, they cover the very best stretches of South Wales’ coastline, one of striking contrasts and wonderful surprises.

The easy, circular pub walks take in the South Wales Coast between Tenby and Chepstow, including parts of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and the Severn Estuary – as well as Swansea and Cardiff. All the pubs are situated either right on the coast or a short hop inland — some in coves and harbours, some in the dunes or close to clifftops, others almost on the sand — and the majority are open all day.

With the pubs often open all year and the walking good in all seasons, the South Wales Coast is quite rightly a year-round destination.

Description

Top 10 Walks: South Wales Coast: Pub Walks

One of twelve books in the Top 10 Walks: Wales Coast Path series

What could be better than a bracing coastal walk followed by a pint and maybe a meal in an authentic Welsh pub by the sea?

The South Wales coast is home to a surprising variety of beaches, coasts and historical sites. Rhossili Bay is battered by waves from the open Atlantic, while Laugharne and Llansteffan are sheltered by sandbanks. At Llantwit Major, the coast path lies atop limestone cliffs; at Nash, it is barely above sea level. Three walks skirt castles (Laugharne, Llansteffan and Cardiff ) and both on the Gower visit Neolithic monuments. Habitats include dunes, wetlands, and even ‘Celtic rainforest’.

The pubs are equally varied, including a tap room in Tenby, a quirky modern bar in Cardiff, a community-owned pub in Nash and, of course, more traditional pubs and inns like those on the Gower. There really is something for everyone.

This attractive and cleverly structured guide gives walkers ten of the finest walks to Coastal Pubs on the South Wales Coast section of the deservedly popular Wales Coast Path in a popular pocketable format.

Useful Information

What they say …

The book is beautifully designed with a two column per page layout affording an easy read of the detailed walking routes. Having done several of these walks – or variations on them – I can attest to the detail in the route descriptions.
